Job Description

Position Summary: The Executive Director of SchoolFood is the leader of the premier school food program in the country. This individual is responsible for creating effective ways to assure that over 1 million students have access to healthy food choices with high nutritional standards. This position has a critical impact as it serves over 860,000 total meals daily throughout the five boroughs of New York City. Moreover, with over 8,000 employees and a $400 million budget, the position has significant influence on the national school food industry and the eating habits of future generations.


This Executive Director will provide the leadership to run the daily retail operations of the largest school food program in the country. This includes creating and executing food distribution contracts with food vendors, maximizing students’ access to free or reduced priced meals, and making the most of federal resources to cover the expenses of the program. Performs related work.

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer, Office of School Support Services

Direct Reports: All School Food directors and staff.

Key Relationships: Relationships will be fostered with SchoolFood directors, support staff, vendors, and other personnel related to or interested in nutritional services for NYC students.



  • Builds on the vision for the organization by infusing it into the culture of the organization.
  • Directs all food service operations, including the purchase of food and supplies and adherence to contractual guidelines from registered vendors and field operations policies along with other pertinent functions associated with managing a business unit.
  • Drives the research and development of improved methods of service delivery, safety, and business practices for SchoolFood operations.
  • Provides leadership and exercises policy and administrative responsibility and maintenance for the strategic planning, design, development, and enhancement of all management information systems utilized by SchoolFood.
  • Advises the Chief Executive Officer on matters relating to the provision of food services to students of New York City. Serves as a member of the Chief’s senior staff, providing advice and perspective on matters affecting food service policy for the New York City public schools.
  • Serves as a resource for local, state and federal government agencies with an interest in the area of school food services.

Qualification Requirements:


  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent educational experience, with academic major in food and nutrition, food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, or a related field or Bachelor’s degree in any academic major, and State-recognized certificate for school nutrition directors or Bachelor’s degree in any academic major and five or more years’ experience in management of school nutrition programs.
  • Success in a management and communication role within a large organization.
  • Knowledge and understanding of overall organizational strategy.
  • Ability to prepare written reports and presentations clearly and concisely.
  • Capability in implementation of policies and procedures on a department-wide scale.
  • Success and talent when building a team and the ability to manage in a fast-paced environment where customer needs are first.   
  • Internal candidates preferred.

Salary: $152,361+

Job Requirements
  1. A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in public administration, business administration, education administration, personnel administration, management or a related field and four years of satisfactory, responsible, full-time experience in any of the above areas or in another area of specialization applicable to the position, at least 18 months of which must have been in an administrative, consultative, managerial or executive capacity; or
  2. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" above. However, all candidates must possess the 18 months of administrative, consultative, managerial or executive experience as described above.
